After over a decade of postponement, the long-awaited Louvre Abu Dhabi Universal Museum is finally nearing completion and will serve as a crowning achievement for Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates, solidifying their position as one of the most beloved cultural nations in the world.
The famous name of this joint venture between the French and Abu Dhabi governments tells it all: it is the first global museum on the Arabian Peninsula. Despite its name, the Louvre Museum isn’t only about copying its layout and exhibits; rather, it’s about laying out a logical path to discovery, openness, and unity. This innovative and thought-provoking method establishes an ideal setting for the dissemination of knowledge and the sharing of cultural practices, letting guests peruse the vast exhibits that cover the history of various civilizations, draw comparisons between them, and, most importantly, reflect on the true values held by each.
The permanent installations at this $650 million museum cover over 65,000 square feet and showcase a wide range of objects that portray both ancient and modern artistic expressions. The majority of the collection is supported by loans from renowned museums such as the Musée du Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, and the Centre Pompidou. From prehistoric times until the advent of Islam, the classical period, and the current day are all covered in chronological order by the museum’s displays. There is about 20,000 square feet of space available for temporary exhibitions, in addition to a children’s section.
The Louvre Abu Dhabi Universal Museum, above all else, is a breathtaking floating wonderland. Part of the vibrant Saadiyat Cultural District, which will also house museums like the Guggenheim and Zayed National Museums, it comprises a sequence of breathtaking white buildings that resemble an Arabian city. The breathtaking design by the renowned French architect Jean Nouvel is based on old building techniques employed in the area, such as the Falaj water system and the interweaving of palm leaves for roofing.
The exquisite geometric lace dome, adorned with hundreds of star-like cladding patterns, appears to be the main attraction of this captivating structure. A beautiful contrast between light and shadow is produced by the resultant structure’s sophisticated perforations. The visually stunning, conceptually original, and comprehensively interesting museum is, needless to say, remarkable in every respect.
