The Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, developed by Emaar Properties, first opened its doors to visitors in 2008. This rectangular-shaped aquarium features a tunnel running through it. The main aquarium tank holds 10 million liters of water and measures 51 meters in length, 20 meters in width, and 11 meters in height. Emaar Properties, the developer behind this stunning attraction, is also the mastermind behind the iconic Burj Khalifa.

The Underwater Zoo, which is located next to the aquarium, lets visitors interact closely with a range of creatures, such as water rats, sea horses, jellyfish, piranhas, crabs, and penguins.

What is special about the Dubai Aquarium?

Meet the Otters

Of the 13 otter species, this one is the smallest and is indigenous to Asia. In addition to getting to know these endearing and captivating creatures, guests may take a unique behind-the-scenes tour of the otters’ homes at the Underwater Zoo. The Asian small-clawed otter is the tiniest breed of otter worldwide. It weighs less than 5 kg. These are critically endangered species. Being carnivores by nature, they graze on fish, crabs, snails, and insects while living in swamps, rivers, and rice fields. Otters may consume up to 20% of their body weight per day because of their aggressive hunger. 

Being clever creatures, they excel at utilizing tools. For example, they can pick up stones to crack open mussels.

Before you go out for your dive in the 10 million-liter aquarium, your dive trainer will give you a brief theoretical lecture and then teach you the fundamental safety procedures and techniques inside of a cage.

Swim with Sharks

When you go on your diving adventure, which is arranged in cooperation with Al Boom Diving, you’ll get to dive with Sand Tiger Sharks, Reef Sharks, Leopard Sharks, Tawny Nurse Sharks, Giant Groupers, Stingrays, and a plethora of other marine animals. Reservations beforehand are necessary for aquatic adventures.

Snorkeling cage: Anyone over the age of eight may enjoy the Cage Snorkelling Experience, which allows guests to leap into a 10-million-liter tank without the need for diving gear if they’re not scuba divers but still want a comparable adventure.

More than 33,000 species call the aquarium, one of the biggest suspended aquariums in the world, home. The tank is home to around 400 sharks and rays, the largest collection of Sand Tiger sharks in the world among them.

Photography: During a thirty-minute theoretical session, you can learn how to identify sharks for preservation, pick up underwater photographic ideas, and snap pictures with either your own or our expert underwater camera. You will also leave with lasting recollections.

The Underwater Zoo frequently has modern displays. ‘UAE’s Night Creatures’ is one such display that depicts the feeling of dusk in the desert as creatures of the dark.
